We are excited to begin our new life together and look forward to sharing our special day with you!
You could call our story a modern love story. We met online in February 2016 and while we had many overlapping friendships, we didn’t find ourselves in the same room until technology lent a helping hand. Tinder, you ask? Nope. Instead a charming site called Coffee Meets Bagel. Nevertheless, after a brief exchange online Matt called Mel and the conversation was easy and intriguing. A drink seemed like the logical next step and later that week, we met at Des Moines’s Juniper Moon. Mel will tell you Matt was late and Matt will tell you this is the only time Mel has been on time! The after-work locale, whose website claims it as the place where deals get done and love is bolstered, became the backdrop of something brewing. What felt like a song was actually three hours later, still laughing and planning our future dates. As Matt walked Melissa to her car, he leaned in for a kiss and Mel obliged in the wintery air. He would later tell his closest friends what his heart was saying, “I’m going to marry that girl.”
It’s been a whirlwind of weekly date nights, travel and adventure. We’ve shared our mutual passion of travel, logged a lot of road trip miles and deepened our relationship through windshield time. Trips have been as far-flung as Orange County to Boulder, Austin to Okoboji, and our most meaningful adventure yet, our engagement, complete with a brass band in the New Orleans streets.
We share another mutual passion of family. Mel’s been welcomed by Matt’s family with a sense of relief that “gosh, he was able to find someone that would and could put up with him!” Melissa’s been invited to holidays and special events since the day the Guess family first met her, with qualifiers from Neil, Matt’s dad, saying “if he messes this up you are still invited to the holiday and he can figure it out for himself!” Matt will tell you that his first time meeting Melissa’s family was memorable, joining in on a family reunion in Knierim, Iowa, population 60. Shouts of excitement were only rivaled by the applause of her aunts, uncles and cousins welcoming Melissa’s man to the occasion. The joy was short lived for Matt though as he was jokingly called Marvin the rest of the weekend. Let’s just say Marvin has stuck around.
We’ve experienced both excitement and challenges during our time together. We know we haven’t been dating long, but most everyone says we weren’t engaged fast enough! We’re so happy and cannot wait to continue building our life together. Thank you all for your support, encouragement, nudging and grace. We’d be delighted for you to be a part of the first day that will celebrate our life together and hope you’ll be with us until the end. Whether you can join us for the wedding in November or not, know you’ll always be special to us!
